FroGlow storyboards .20.jpg

(Storyboards)

- Despite already being proficient in 3D character animation in Autodesk Maya, this was the first project I was tasked to utilize a different 3D software as the basis of showcasing mainly 3D motion graphics.

Read further to see my design & animation process!

Process:

- First, I started designing the character in Adobe Photoshop. Going into this, I knew I wanted the character to have geometric-shaped body proportions for modeling to be less complicated.

- Once that was finalized, I started the modeling process separately in Cinema4D & Maya...

- After trials & tribulations from experimentation,

I ultimately decided the process would go more efficiently had I modeled the character entirely in Cinema4D, then export the model into Autodesk Maya

(the 3D software I'm most familiar with)

for rigging & animation.

- Despite learning about the "rubber hose-style" rigging commonly seen in 3D motion graphics,

I quickly realized that it wouldn't be necessary- preferring the method of IK/FK for the legs & arms, respectively.

-Stylistically, I still wanted to do 2D effects to further enhance the overall animation. With how the story is set up, the character goes through what can easily be seen as an 'outer-body experience'.

In After Effects, I utilized different multi-colored shapes (mainly swirls & sparkles) and 'roto-brushed' the character out as a separate layer to easily apply a glow effect to radiate around the character as they float upward to properly emulate the "glowing" sensation.

- For the visible facial expressions, time needed to be spent drawing that frame-by-frame in Photoshop

- Eventually, once all the animation was finished, it was time to work on the title card (done in 2D)...
